FAQs on the European Accessibility Act
The European regulation on digital accessibility, defined by the European Accessibility Act (EAA), requires that websites, apps, e-commerce stores, PDF documents, digital platforms, and other digital products be accessible to people with disabilities.
From June 28, 2025, all in-scope companies must comply with the WCAG technical criteria and provide an up-to-date Accessibility Statement.
Failure to comply may result in administrative penalties and reports to the competent supervisory authorities.
All businesses must comply if they have:
- More than 10 employees
- Annual revenue exceeding €2 million
Scope of application: websites, e-commerce platforms, banks, mobile apps, digital platforms, transport services, telecommunications, ICT products, and software.
Failure to comply may result in: fines, removal of apps from stores, or withdrawal of products from the market.
Complying with digital accessibility regulations is not just about “ticking the box.” It means starting a real journey towards accessibility. Here’s the path we recommend:
1. Initial Assessment
Begin with an audit of your website or apps to identify barriers that prevent users with disabilities from accessing content.
2. Remediation Plan
Create a roadmap with clear priorities, timelines, and concrete actions on code, content, and documents (PDFs, forms, etc.).
3. Implementation & Technical Support
Your internal team or agencies receive ongoing support to optimize your site, with guidelines, AI-powered tools, and user testing with people with disabilities.
4. Accessibility Statement
This is mandatory and must be drafted according to Italian and European standards. It also needs to be updated every year.
5. Training & Maintenance
Compliance is not a one-time goal—it’s an ongoing process. That’s why training your teams and continuously monitoring accessibility are crucial. With AccessiWay, you can manage the entire process with a single partner: from audit and remediation to the accessibility statement and training.
